EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures Arthur Wellesley Peel, 1st Viscount Peel (1829-1912), during his tenure as Speaker of the House of Commons and Member of Parliament for Warwick. Peel's political career began in earnest in 1859 when he was elected as the Conservative MP for Tamworth. However, he was unseated in the following election and did not return to Parliament until 1865, when he was elected as the MP for Warwick. Peel's rise through the ranks of the Conservative Party was meteoric. In 1874, he was appointed as Chief Secretary for Ireland, a position he held until 1876. He then served as President of the Board of Trade from 1876 to 1878, and as Home Secretary from 1880 to 1882. In 1884, Peel was elevated to the peerage, becoming the 1st Viscount Peel. Peel's most notable achievement came in 1884 when he was appointed as Speaker of the House of Commons, a position he held until 1894. As Speaker, Peel presided over some of the most contentious debates of the late Victorian era, including those related to Irish Home Rule and the Boer Wars. This engraving, produced in 1912, captures Peel in the prime of his political career, with the dignified air of a seasoned parliamentarian. The image of Peel, resplendent in his robes of office, serves as a reminder of the important role that the Speaker of the House of Commons plays in the functioning of British democracy. Peel's legacy extends beyond his political achievements. He was a passionate advocate for education and was instrumental in the establishment of the University of Birmingham. He was also a patron of the arts, and his collection of paintings and sculptures is now housed in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. This engraving is an important historical document, providing a glimpse into the life and times of a man who played a pivotal role in shaping British politics in the late Victorian era.
