EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, His Royal Highness Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (1850-1942), the third son of Queen Victoria, is depicted in formal attire, exuding an air of regal confidence. Born on May 1, 1850, at Buckingham Palace, Connaught was the first child of Princess Victoria, Princess Royal, and Prince Frederick of Prussia. Upon his mother's ascension to the throne in 1837, Connaught was given the title of Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, and was created Marquess of Cornwall and Duke of Leinster in 1899. He served in the British Army, reaching the rank of Field Marshal, and represented the monarchy on various diplomatic missions, including a tour of Canada in 1866 and a visit to Japan in 1862, where he became the first European to be received by the Emperor. During World War I, Connaught played an active role in the war effort, serving as the Governor-General of Canada from 1911 to 1916, where he oversaw the mobilization of Canadian forces for the war. He also served as the Commander-in-Chief of the British Home Forces from 1917 to 1918. In this photograph, the Duke of Connaught is seen wearing the uniform of the Royal Horse Guards, a regiment with which he had a long association. The photograph captures the Duke's distinguished military career and his connection to the British monarchy. The image is a testament to a bygone era of royalty and military tradition, and offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable historical figure. Mary Evans Picture Library's collection includes a vast array of historical photographs, offering researchers, historians, and enthusiasts access to unique and rare images of people, places, and events from the past. This photograph of the Duke of Connaught is just one example of the wealth of historical material available in the Library's archives.
