EDITORS COMMENTS
In this iconic photograph, taken by Colorsport on April 19, 1972, Charlie George of Arsenal Football Club is embraced by an ecstatic fan at the final whistle of the FA Cup Semi-Final replay against Stoke City at Goodison Park. The image captures the raw emotion and excitement of the moment as George's team secured their place in the FA Cup Final. Charlie George, a local lad from North London, had joined Arsenal as an apprentice in 1963 and made his debut for the first team in 1967. He went on to become a key player for the Gunners, scoring crucial goals in their 1970 FA Cup final victory against Liverpool. However, it was this FA Cup Semi-Final replay against Stoke City that would cement his place in Arsenal folklore. The match, which took place at Goodison Park due to a draw in the original fixture, saw Arsenal trailing 1-0 with just minutes remaining on the clock. George, who had been brought on as a substitute, equalized with a stunning volley in the 88th minute, sending the game into extra time. Arsenal went on to win 2-1, and George's goal became known as one of the greatest in Arsenal history. The image of George being congratulated by the jubilant fan encapsulates the passion and unity between the players and the fans. The FA Cup was Arsenal's first major trophy in a decade, and the team's success was a source of pride and joy for the supporters. This photograph serves as a reminder of the special bond between the players and fans of Arsenal Football Club and the magic of the FA Cup.
