EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the impressive sight of two US Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk Multi-Mission Helicopters stationed at Kandahar Airfield in 2010. These four-bladed, twin-engine helicopters are renowned for their versatility and reliability, making them a vital asset in military operations. Manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft, the Black Hawk is primarily used as a troop carrier and logistical support aircraft. However, its capabilities extend far beyond that. The helicopter can be configured to perform various missions such as medical evacuation, command-and-control operations, search-and-rescue missions, armed escort duties, electronic warfare tasks, and even executive transport. Kandahar Airfield played a crucial role in supporting combat operations from 2001 to 2014. Part of it was known as RAF Kandahar and served as an operational base for the Royal Air Force (RAF), Fleet Air Arm (FAA), and Army Air Corps (AAC). It formed one end of the "Air Bridge" that connected with RAF Brize Norton in the UK. As Afghanistan's second international airport and one of its largest military bases, Kandahar International Airport provided ample space for over two hundred military aircraft. Additionally, it served as a hub for all other ISAF airborne forces during this period. This image showcases both the power of these iconic helicopters and the significant role played by Kandahar Airfield in supporting military operations during those years.
