Royal Navy Type 23 frigate HMS Kent

Royal Navy Type 23 frigate HMS Kent.
Built by BAe Systems (formerly Yarrow Shipbuilders) at Scotstoun on the River Clyde, the current HMS Kent is the twelfth ship to bear the name. Launched in May 1998 by her Sponsor, HRH Princess Alexandra, the Ships Company is very proud of her distinguished history within the Royal Navy.
The first HMS Kent was commissioned in 1650, and since then there have only been 60 years cumulatively where there has not been an HMS Kent in the Navy. An impressive 16 Battle Honors earned by her predecessors, mean that the Ship is able to live up to her motto Invicta, the Latin for Unconquerable, which has almost as much history as the Ship herself.
In 1066 when William the Conquerer was consolidating his newly-gained power in England, he marched south towards Kent from London. To repel the invading Normans, the men of Kent used the Old Oak wood in their trees to create the noise in the forests of a much larger army than there actually was, fooling the invading forces into creating a treaty which allowed the King of Kent to retain certain privileges and traditions.
HMS Kent still honours this link when sailing into ports in Kent, by flying a bow of holme oak from the yardarm

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the majestic Royal Navy Type 23 frigate, HMS Kent. Built by BAe Systems at Scotstoun on the River Clyde, this vessel is the twelfth ship to bear the prestigious name. Launched in May 1998 by her Sponsor, HRH Princess Alexandra, HMS Kent holds a distinguished history within the Royal Navy that fills her crew with immense pride. Dating back to 1650, when the first HMS Kent was commissioned, there have only been a cumulative total of 60 years without an HMS Kent serving in the Navy. The ship's predecessors have earned an impressive 16 Battle Honors, allowing her to live up to her motto "Invicta, " meaning Unconquerable in Latin. This motto carries as much historical significance as the ship itself. The connection between HMS Kent and its namesake county runs deep. In 1066, during William the Conqueror's consolidation of power in England, he faced resistance from men of Kent who cleverly used Old Oak wood from their trees to create deceptive noises in forests. This tactic fooled invading Normans into believing they were facing a larger army than they actually were and resulted in a treaty granting certain privileges and traditions for the King of Kent. To honor this historic link when sailing into ports located within Kent County today, HMS Kent proudly flies a bow made from holme oak from its yardarm. This print encapsulates not just a magnificent warship but also centuries of tradition and valor associated with one of Britain's most renowned naval vessels.
