Kauri Forest - three big Kauri trees surrounded by undergrowth
Trounson Kauri Park Scenic Reserve, Northland, North Island, New Zealand
Agathis australis
The felling of nearly all of New Zealand's Kauri forests is a very sad story. The oldest of the few giant Kauris that are left are over 1200 years old and deliver an unbelievable volume of valuable wood. That is the reason why nearly all of them were felled starting from around 150 years ago when the Europeans entered the land. In just over 100 years logging gum-digging and burning transformed the northern landscape from forest to farmland. A final push to extract the last Kauri swept through the north of New Zealand in the 1920s-30s reducing the beleaguered forest to the few patches surviving today. Despite being reduced to less than 5 % of their former extent new generations of kauri forests are once more thrusting up through the scrub wherever areas of marginal farmland are abandoned. The very slow growing but very resistent Kauri is the ultimate survivor.

Nature's Resilient Giants - The Kauri Forest's Unbelievable Story

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, three magnificent Kauri trees stand tall amidst a lush undergrowth in Trounson Kauri Park Scenic Reserve, Northland, New Zealand. These ancient giants, known as Agathis australis, have witnessed the heartbreaking tale of their kind. Once thriving across New Zealand, the felling of these majestic forests is a sorrowful chapter in history. Over 150 years ago, European settlers arrived and began harvesting these valuable trees that could reach over 1200 years old. Logging, gum-digging, and burning transformed the landscape from forest to farmland within just a century. However, hope sprouts anew as new generations of kauri forests emerge from abandoned farmlands. Despite being reduced to less than 5% of their former glory, these slow-growing yet resilient survivors prove nature's indomitable spirit. The Sailer duo beautifully captures this bittersweet story through their lens. Their photo serves as a reminder that we must cherish and protect our natural wonders for future generations to enjoy.
