These are the result of tectonic uplift in the Pleistocene and Recent geologic periods, when irregular increases in upward thrust allowed coral reefs to develop along the shoreline, before being raised above sea level and changing to limestone terraces. About twenty terraces are present, rising to a height of 200m above sea level, and each representing an ancient shoreline. Covered predominantly in grasses, with treed areas in erosion channels, the terraces are not suitable for village gardens; most villages along this coast rely principally upon fishing as the main source of food.

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us on a journey back in time along the Finschhafen coast of Papua New Guinea. The image showcases nature's artistic prowess, with staircase-like raised coral terraces that resemble an enchanting pathway carved by the waves. These mesmerizing formations are the result of tectonic uplift during the Pleistocene and Recent geologic periods. As if frozen in time, these terraces stand tall at a staggering height of 200m above sea level, each representing an ancient shoreline from ages past. Covered predominantly in lush grasses and adorned with pockets of trees nestled within erosion channels, these terraces create a breathtaking sight. However, their unsuitability for village gardens has led communities along this coast to rely primarily on fishing as their main source of sustenance. Photographer Eric Lindgren skillfully captures this remarkable natural wonder, inviting us to marvel at its beauty and ponder the mysteries it holds. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring scene, we can't help but imagine ourselves stepping onto those ancient shores and experiencing life as it once was.
