EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning frontal portrait captures the majesty of an adult Eastern Grey Kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) standing proudly on its hind legs in Canarvon Gorge National Park, Queensland, Australia. The Eastern Grey Kangaroo is the largest of all kangaroo species, with its gigantic long foot adapted for hopping across various terrains. This species is native to coastal plains, the Great Dividing Range, and inland plains where annual rainfall exceeds 250 mm. Eastern Grey Kangaroos live in mobs, with separate hierarchies for males and females. Within these mobs, they form extended family groups consisting of a dominant male, several females, and their young. Young males of breeding age tend to form separate groups, while battle-worn old males often choose to live alone. Adult males challenge one another to establish their rank in the mob hierarchy. The higher a male's status, the more females will mate with him. Females give birth to one tiny embryo, which weighs less than 1 g after 36 months of gestation. This naked and blind embryo wanders into its mother's pouch and attaches itself to a teat. After 44 weeks of living in the pouch, the joey leaves from time to time to take forays into the outside world.
