EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures a group of Timber Rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) basking in their natural habitat in the forests of Pennsylvania, United States. Timber Rattlesnakes are a type of pit viper, widely distributed throughout the eastern United States. They are legally protected in eight of the 32 states in which they occur. These venomous snakes are easily identified by their distinctive triangular heads, pit organs located between their eyes and nostrils, and the iconic rattle at the end of their tail. Gravid females, like the ones pictured here, are often found basking in the sun to help regulate their body temperature and prepare for the birth of their live young, which are ovoviviparous, meaning they hatch from eggs inside the mother's body. Timber Rattlesnakes are ectothermic, or cold-blooded, reptiles that play a vital role in the ecosystem as apex predators. However, their populations are declining due to habitat loss, persecution, and other human activities. It is important to appreciate these dangerous yet beautiful creatures from a safe distance and respect their importance in the natural world.
