While it may seem like an idyllic scene, let's not forget that these mischievous macaques are classified as "IUCN Vulnerable". The majority of their population resides in the Middle Atlas Mountains of Morocco, with dwindling numbers scattered across pockets of northern Morocco and Algeria. Their survival is threatened by rampant logging and land clearance for agriculture. Interestingly enough, these intelligent creatures have adapted to urban living amidst human settlements – a testament to their resilience! Although they prefer cedar forests at higher altitudes (which have been reduced due to human activity), they continue to thrive even in towns like Gibraltar. With a varied diet consisting of leaves, grass, acorns, and caterpillars – talk about being foodies! – these social animals live harmoniously in groups ranging from 7 to 40 individuals. Adult females and males work together to raise offspring within tight-knit communities.
