Frankfurter Tor Featured Stalinist Architecture Print

Frankfurter Tor

Frankfurter Tor, is a large square in the inner-city Friedrichshain locality of Berlin.
The previously unnamed square received the name Frankfurter Tor on 8 November 1957 in the course of its reconstruction after World War II. The designation recalls both the nearby original location of the city gate that once provided access to the road to the city of Frankfurt.
The prominent twin towers on the western side of the square, significant examples of the Stalinist architectural style, were built between 1953 and 1956 as part of the Stalinallee ensemble according to plans by Hermann Henselmann.
Their architecture evokes the idea of a city entrance

The Sukharev Tower, Moscow, Russia, 1902 Artist: Otto Kirchner

The Sukharev Tower, Moscow, Russia, 1902. The Moscow Baroque Sukharev Tower was built in 1692-1695 to commemorate Peter the Great's victory over the rebellion led by his sister, Sophia. It was named after LP Sukharev, the commander of a regiment of Streltsy (guardsmen armed with firearms) which fought on Peter's side. The tower was demolished in 1934 during the Stalinist rebuilding of Moscow. From a private collection
