Apres La Guerre by George Ranstead
Humorous postcard from the WWI era by George Ranstead, an amateur artist who served in the Army Pay Corps. A soldier finally arrives back from the Front to discover that the baby born in his absence is now a grown, and very mature woman (at least I think thats the joke!). Ranstead was one of many soldiers of WWI who took up drawing as a hobby. His subjects range from wartime humour to pictures of pretty girls and are clearly influenced by images in the illustrated magazines of the period.
circa 1916

Apres La Guerre
EDITORS COMMENTS
by George Ranstead: A Hilarious WWI-Era Postcard Discovering the Surprise of Demobilization Amidst the somber and often harrowing realities of the First World War, a touch of humor emerged in the form of amateur artist George Ranstead's postcard, "Apres La Guerre." This delightful, humorous postcard, created around 1916, offers a lighthearted take on the experience of a soldier returning home after a long absence. Ranstead, who served in the Army Pay Corps, was one of many soldiers who took up drawing as a pastime during their time in the military. His artwork reflects the influence of the illustrated magazines of the period, with subjects ranging from wartime humor to pictures of pretty girls. In "Apres La Guerre," a soldier stands in shock as he encounters a grown woman, presumably his daughter, who has been born during his time at the Front. The title, borrowed from the famous painting "Apres-midi d'un Faune" by Henri Matisse, adds an unexpected layer of sophistication to the otherwise humorous scene. The soldier's expression of disbelief and the woman's confident, knowing smile convey the passage of time and the changes that have occurred in his absence. The detail in Ranstead's drawing, from the soldier's uniform to the intricate patterns on the woman's dress, showcases his skill and talent as an artist. This charming postcard offers a glimpse into the lives of soldiers during the demobilization process and the unexpected surprises that awaited them upon their return home. With its witty commentary on the passage of time and the enduring power of family, "Apres La Guerre" remains a captivating and amusing piece of WWI history.
