EDITORS COMMENTS
In this chilling historical portrait, Antoine Dreux Daubray, a civil lieutenant of Paris, is depicted in solemn contemplation. Born in 1610, Daubray rose through the ranks of the French judiciary to become a respected and influential figure in the capital city. However, his life took a tragic and infamous turn when he became the victim of a heinous crime perpetrated by his own daughter, Marie Madeleine, Marquise de Brinvilliers. Marie Madeleine, born in 1638, was a notorious figure in French history. She was known for her beauty and her insatiable appetite for wealth and power. In her quest for fortune, she resorted to the most nefarious means, including poisoning her father and several other family members. The year was 1676, and Marie Madeleine had grown tired of her father's control over her inheritance. She concocted a deadly poison, which she administered to Daubray during a family dinner. The poison took effect swiftly, and Antoine Dreux Daubray died a painful and agonizing death. Marie Madeleine's crimes did not go unnoticed for long, and she was soon apprehended and brought to trial. She was found guilty of the murders and was executed by being burnt at the stake on October 23, 1676. This haunting portrait of Antoine Dreux Daubray serves as a grim reminder of the darker side of human nature and the consequences of greed and ambition. The image captures the sadness and despair that must have engulfed the civil lieutenant in his final moments, as he was betrayed by the very person who was supposed to love and care for him the most. The portrait is a poignant testament to the enduring power of family ties, both positive and negative, and the indelible mark that Marie Madeleine, Marquise de Brinvilliers, left on French history as a notorious murderess.
