This evocative image depicts the controversial figure of Anti-Pope Benedictus XIII (1328-1423), also known as Pedro de Luna, who ruled as an antipope from 1410 to 1418. The schism in the Catholic Church during this period, which saw the coexistence of two popes, arose from a dispute over the legitimacy of the election of Martin V in 1417. Benedictus XIII, a Spanish cardinal, had been elected in Avignon, France, by a faction of cardinals who refused to recognize the new pope. The antipope's reign was marked by political intrigue and conflict, as he sought to maintain his power base in the face of Martin V's growing support. In this print, Benedictus XIII is depicted in grand papal attire, wearing the triple tiara and holding the papal staff, symbolizing his claim to the papacy.
