EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of the Russian Civil War, as Anti-Bolshevik Czech troops under the command of Alexander Kerensky prepare to mount their horses and advance against Leninist forces in Siberia in 1918. The Czech Legion, a volunteer army composed primarily of Czechoslovak exiles, had initially allied themselves with the Russian Provisional Government against the Bolsheviks. However, after the Bolsheviks signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Germany in March 1918, which ended Russia's involvement in World War I, the Czech Legion found themselves in a precarious position. Facing the prospect of being trapped in Russia or being forcibly repatriated by the Germans, the Czech Legion decided to march their troops and their families towards Vladivostok, with the intention of being evacuated to the Western Allies. Along the way, they were repeatedly attacked by Bolshevik forces, leading to a series of fierce battles. In this photograph, we see the Anti-Bolshevik Czech troops, dressed in a mix of Russian and Czech uniforms, gathered around their horses, which they had requisitioned from local farmers and railway workers. Their faces are etched with determination and resolve, as they prepare to face the Leninist forces that lie ahead. The scene is one of intense focus and urgency, as the fate of the Czech Legion hangs in the balance. Alexander Kerensky, a Russian politician and former Prime Minister, stands at the center of the photograph, his expression serious and intent. He had come to Siberia to lead the Czech Legion in their fight against the Bolsheviks, and this photograph captures a pivotal moment in their struggle for survival and freedom. The Russian Civil War would continue until 1922, and the outcome would have significant implications for the future of Europe and the world.
