This evocative portrait captures Antoine Court de Gebelin (1727-1784), a prominent French Protestant historian and antiquary of the 18th century. Born in Chalon-sur-Saône, Court de Gebelin dedicated his life to the study of history and antiquities, with a particular focus on the history of his native region and the history of the Huguenots, the French Protestant reformed Christian movement. The image, produced in 1784, depicts Court de Gebelin in scholarly attire, wearing a robe and holding a quill pen and an open book. His serious expression and piercing gaze convey a deep sense of concentration and intellectual rigor. The background, adorned with books and antique objects, underscores his role as an antiquary, a scholar who studies ancient artifacts and historical relics. Court de Gebelin's most famous work, "An Essay on Ancient Symbols," published in 1781, brought him both fame and controversy.
