EDITORS COMMENTS
Anne of Austria, also known as Anne of Austria, Queen of France and Anne of Austria, Queen of Navarre, is depicted in this elegant 17th-century portrait. Born in 1601 in Brussels, Belgium, Anne was the daughter of Archduke Albert and Isabella of Spain. At the age of 14, she was married to King Louis XIII of France, who was 21 years her senior. The marriage was arranged to strengthen the alliance between the Spanish and French monarchies. Anne's entry into Paris in 1615 was a grand spectacle, with the city decorated in her honor and a procession of nobles and commoners lining the streets to welcome her. As queen, Anne was known for her beauty, intelligence, and piety. She was a devout Catholic and played an active role in court life, sponsoring charities and patronizing the arts. This portrait, created in 1666, shows Anne in her later years. She is dressed in the robes of the Order of the Annunciation, a prestigious religious order to which she belonged. Her hair is styled in the latest fashion, with a tall headdress adorned with pearls and diamonds. Her expression is serene and regal, reflecting her status as a queen consort and the dignity of the French monarchy. Anne's marriage to Louis XIII was childless, and after his death in 1643, she retired to the Abbey of Chelles, where she lived until her death in 1666. She was later buried in the Basilica of Saint-Denis, the royal necropolis of the French monarchy. This portrait is a testament to the beauty and grace of Anne of Austria, a queen who played an important role in the history of France and Europe in the 17th century.
