1456 1485 Anne I Ii Neville

EDITORS COMMENTS
Anne Neville, the enigmatic Queen of Richard III, is depicted in this exquisite 15th-century portrait. Born in 1456, Anne was the daughter of the powerful Earl of Warwick, the Kingmaker, and his wife, Isabel Neville. Her marriage to King Richard III in 1472 was a strategic union designed to strengthen Richard's position on the English throne. Anne's beauty is evident in this image, with her delicate features, rosy cheeks, and expressive eyes. She is shown wearing a richly decorated gown, adorned with pearls and ermine fur, signifying her royal status. The intricate headdress, adorned with precious stones and pearls, adds to her regal appearance. The background of the portrait is filled with symbols of power and wealth, including a lion and a unicorn, the emblems of the English monarchy, and a fleur-de-lis, a symbol of the Neville family. The inscription at the bottom of the image reads "Anna Regina," further emphasizing Anne's role as queen. Anne's reign was brief, as Richard III was defeated and killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, and Anne was later married to Henry Tudor, who became King Henry VII. Anne died in 1485, possibly from the effects of childbirth, leaving behind two young sons, Edward and Richard, who would later become King Edward V and King Richard III, respectively. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of Anne Neville, a queen whose story is often overshadowed by the more famous figures of the late medieval period. It serves as a reminder of the complex political alliances and power struggles that shaped the history of England during this time.
