EDITORS COMMENTS
Anne de Beaujeu, Daughter of Louis XI and Wife of Pierre de Bourbon, 1522 (Mary Evans Picture Library) Anne de Beaujeu, also known as Anne de France, was born on January 25, 1461, in Château de Châteaudun, France. She was the eldest daughter of King Louis XI of France and his second wife, Charlotte of Savoy. Anne's father was known for his political acumen and shrewdness, ruling France from 1461 to 1483. In 1470, Anne was betrothed to Pierre de Bourbon, the eldest son of Jean I, Count of Vendôme, and Jeanne de Bourbon. The marriage was a strategic alliance aimed at strengthening the ties between the Bourbon and Valois-Anjou families. The couple's wedding took place on April 19, 1476, when Anne was just 15 years old. This striking portrait of Anne de Beaujeu, created in 1522, captures her in the prime of her life. She is depicted wearing a richly decorated gown, adorned with pearls and other precious stones. Her elaborate headdress, topped with a feathered plume, further emphasizes her noble status. Anne was known for her intelligence, beauty, and strong will. She played an active role in the political affairs of the Bourbon and Valois-Anjou families, and was a patron of the arts and letters. After Pierre's death in 1488, Anne became regent for her son, Charles III, Duke of Bourbon, until his coming of age in 1498. Anne de Beaujeu passed away on January 9, 1522, at the age of 61, leaving behind a rich legacy as a powerful and influential figure in French and European history. This beautiful portrait serves as a testament to her enduring beauty and the esteem in which she was held during her lifetime.
