EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant portrait, Anne Catherine, Countess of Antrim, is depicted in the height of Regency-era fashion. Born Anne Macdonnell, she was the daughter of the 1st Earl of Antrim and Lady Anne Coke. Her first marriage was to Sir Henry Vane-Tempest, with whom she had six children. Tragically, Sir Henry passed away in 1813. Seven years later, in 1820, Anne married Edward Phelps, who was later elevated to the title of Earl of Antrim in 1827. The Countess's second marriage brought her even greater prestige and wealth. Anne Catherine's striking appearance is accentuated by her elaborate hairstyle, adorned with pearls and feathers, and her elegant gown, which features a low-cut neckline and intricate embroidery. Her expressive eyes and confident posture convey a sense of intelligence and poise. The portrait captures Anne Catherine at a pivotal moment in her life, as she navigated the complexities of Regency society and the challenges of being a widow and a wife. Despite the hardships she faced, she remained a prominent figure in Irish and British high society until her death in 1834. This portrait, created in the late 18th or early 19th century, is a testament to the Countess's beauty, grace, and resilience. It offers a glimpse into the opulent world of the Regency aristocracy and the intricacies of their social lives. The portrait's enduring appeal lies in its ability to transport us back in time and provide a window into the life of a remarkable woman.
