Anne Boleyn, the enigmatic and ambitious second wife of King Henry VIII, is depicted in this exquisite 16th-century portrait, known as the "Cibot Type" or "Type A" image. The print, held by Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a captivating glimpse into the life of one of the most intriguing figures in English history. Anne Boleyn, born in 1501, was the daughter of a wealthy and influential family. She first came to the attention of King Henry VIII around 1526, and their romantic relationship began in 1527. Anne's determination to become queen led her to bear King Henry's illegitimate son, Henry FitzRoy, in 1533. However, she was unable to provide the king with a male heir, and her position grew increasingly precarious. The portrait itself is believed to have been painted around 1536, the year of Anne's downfall. She was accused of adultery and treason, and was ultimately beheaded on May 19, 1536.
