In the late 1770s, she began to experience visions and revelations that led her to believe she was chosen by God to establish a new religious community in America. By 1784, Ann and a small group of followers had emigrated from England to the United States, settling in New Lebanon, New York. There, they established the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, better known as the Shakers.
