Cape Bat Collection

Cape bats (Vespertilionidae) are small mammals found in South Africa. They have a wingspan of up to 8 inches and weigh up to 0.7 ounces, and are grayish-brown in color with a white underside, and their fur is short and soft. Cape bats feed on insects, such as moths, beetles, flies, and mosquitoes. They roost in caves or crevices during the day and emerge at night to hunt for food. During the breeding season they form colonies of up to several hundred individuals. Females give birth to one pup per year after a gestation period of about two months, and are important pollinators for many plants in South Africa's fynbos biome, including proteas and ericas. They also provide an important source of food for predators like owls and hawks.
