Sperm Whale Collection

The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is a large marine mammal that belongs to the cetacean species, which includes all whales, dolphins and porpoises, and is the largest of the toothed whales and can grow up to 20 metres long and weigh up to 57 tonnes, distinctive shape with a large square head that houses its huge teeth. Its diet consists mainly of squid but it also eats fish, octopus and other deep-sea creatures. It lives in all oceans except for polar regions and can dive as deep as 3 kilometres in search of food. The sperm whale has an incredibly loud vocalization called 'clicking' which it uses for communication purposes over long distances underwater, and is highly social and lives in pods ranging from 10-50 individuals with females typically leading the group while males are more solitary creatures who travel alone or in small groups. Despite its size, the sperm whale is an endangered species due to hunting by humans for oil, meat and ivory from their teeth.
