1907 Imperial Conference - Discussions in Whitehall
The Imperial Conference of 1907 - convened in London on 15th April 1907 as the Colonial Conference, concluding on 14th May 1907. The Chairman of the conference was British Prime Minister Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman. The conference decided to cease referring to self-governing British colonies as colonies and conferred upon them dominion status. Participants pictured here are (from left): Sir Joseph Ward (1856-1930) - Prime Minister of New Zealand, Sir Wilfrid Laurier (1841-1919) - Prime Minister of Canada, Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman (1836-1908) - Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, The Earl of Elgin (1849-1917) - United Kingdom Secretary of State for the Colonies, Alfred Deakin (1856-1919) - Prime Minister of Australia, Sir Leander Starr Jameson, 1st Baronet (1853-1917) - Prime Minister of the Cape Colony, Louis Botha ) - South African politician (who was the first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa) and Sir William Lyne (1844-1913) - Australian Minister for Trade and Customs. Street in Gwelo - Gweru (formerly Gwelo until 1982) is a city near the centre of Zimbabwe at WikiMiniAtlas 1925?S 2950?E? / ?19.417S 29.833E? / -19.417; 29.833. It has a population of about 146, 073 (2009), making it the fifth largest city in the nation. Gweru is the capital of Midlands Province, and was founded in 1894 by Dr. Leander Starr Jameson. HMAS Sydney, Leander-class cruiser
The first cruiser laid down for the RAN was Sydney which was launched in August 1912 by Lady Henderson, wife of Admiral Sir Reginald Henderson. She commissioned at Portsmouth on 26 June 1913 under the command of Captain John C.T. Glossop RN. She departed Portsmouth on 25 July 1913 and first arrived on the Australia Station at Albany on 19 September 1913. On 4 October 1913 she formed part of the Australian Fleet Unit that ceremonially entered her namesake harbour to a rapturous welcome from tens of thousands of spectators who turned out on the shores of the harbour to welcome the arrival of 'their fleet.
