The Washington ground squirrel (Spermophilus washingtoni) is a species of rodent in the Sciuridae family, and is native to western North America, ranging from southern British Columbia to northern California and eastward into Idaho and Montana. These ground squirrels are typically brownish-gray in color with a white underside, and they have short ears, long tails, and short legs and can reach lengths of up to 16 inches (41 cm) with an average weight of 1 pound (0.45 kg), and are diurnal animals that feed on a variety of vegetation such as grasses, seeds, nuts, fruits, fungi and insects. They build burrows for shelter which can be up to 3 feet deep (1 m). During the winter months they hibernate for several months at a time in their burrows or other underground areas. The Washington ground squirrel is an important part of its ecosystem as it helps disperse seeds throughout its range while providing food for predators such as coyotes and foxes.
