Le Ciel - Paris Cabaret Nightclub - Adoration of golden pig

Le Ciel - Montmartre, Paris Cabaret Nightclub. The Cabaret du Ciel (Cabaret of Heaven) was an early version of modern theme restaurants, with a theme centered around celestial concepts connected to the afterlife in Paradise. Inside the restaurant, beer was served, and the customers were greeted by acts such as angels playing music, St. Peter sprinkling holy water from the heavens, as well as reenactments of scenes related to Dante's Inferno. Here showgirls surround a golden pig in full-body stockings and festoon this idol with flower garlands. The patrons formed a line, as they approached the statue of the animal, bowing and making the sign of the cross before it. Date: circa 1905

Initial G[audeamus omnes] from a Gradual: The Court of Heaven, 1371-77

Initial G[audeamus omnes] from a Gradual: The Court of Heaven, 1371-77. This elegant and colourful initial G comes from a multivolume set of choral books illuminated by Don Silvestro, a Camaldolese monk, for his monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence. In the original book, this initial would have introduced the text: Gaudeamus omnes in Domino ("Let us rejoice in the Lord"), the beginning of Introit, the introduction, for the Feast of All Saints on November 1. This beautiful initial is generally considered to be the artist's masterpiece

The Church of Santa Maria degli Angely Near Assisi, 1909. Artist: Henri Edmond Cross

The Church of Santa Maria degli Angely Near Assisi, 1909. As a result of a journey to Italy, Cross produced a number of such scenes of Perugia and Assisi. Pointillism - the technique used to produce this work - is a method of painting in which the colour is applied in small dots of paint, the artist breaking complex tones up into pure colours which are then combined by the eye at a distance. The style is often described as Divisionism or Neo-Impressionism
