Ross Seal Collection

Ross seals (Phocidae) are a species of marine mammals found in the Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic regions, and are the smallest of all true seals, reaching an average length of 1.2 meters and a weight of about 60 kilograms. Ross seals have a thick layer of blubber that helps them to survive in cold waters, as well as webbed feet for swimming. They feed mainly on fish and krill, but also eat squid and octopus when available. Ross seals breed during the summer months on ice floes or beaches near their feeding grounds, with females giving birth to one pup per year after a gestation period of 11 months. These animals live solitary lives except during breeding season when they form small colonies on land or ice floes, and are listed as "Least Concern" by the IUCN Red List due to their wide distribution range and stable population size; however, they face threats from climate change which could reduce their habitat availability in future years.
