Platypus Collection

The Platypus (Ornithorhynchidae) is a semi-aquatic mammal native to eastern Australia and Tasmania, and is one of the few species of mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young, streamlined body with dense fur, webbed feet, and a broad flat tail. Its bill resembles that of a duck, but it is covered in soft skin instead of feathers. It feeds on small invertebrates such as insect larvae, worms and shrimp found in the water or on the river bottom. The Platypus spends much of its time foraging for food underwater and can remain submerged for up to 10 minutes at a time while searching for prey, and is also an excellent swimmer and can reach speeds up to 6 km/h when swimming against currents or tides. The Platypus is listed as "Near Threatened" by the IUCN due to habitat destruction caused by human activities such as land clearing, pollution and climate change.
