Collared Pika Collection

The Collared Pika (Ochotonidae) is a small mammal found in the mountains of North America and Asia, and is closely related to rabbits and hares, but has a shorter tail and smaller ears. Its fur is usually grayish-brown with white patches on its neck, chest, and back. It feeds mainly on grasses, herbs, lichens, mosses, fruits, seeds and insects. In summer it builds haypiles which it stores in underground chambers for winter food. The Collared Pika lives in colonies of up to 100 individuals that occupy territories of up to 2 hectares each, and are active during the day and can be seen sunning themselves on rocks or scurrying around their burrows looking for food and are known for their loud vocalizations which they use to communicate with other members of their colony or warn off predators such as foxes or coyotes.
