Desert Cottontail Collection

The Desert Cottontail (Sylvilagus audubonii) is a species of Leporidae mammal found in the deserts and dry regions of North America, and are small, weighing up to 2 pounds, and have large ears with white fur on the tips. They have a grayish-brown coat that helps them blend in with their environment. Their diet consists mainly of grasses and forbs, but they will also eat insects, fruits, and seeds when available, and are active during the day and spend most of their time foraging for food or hiding from predators. They build shallow burrows to escape extreme temperatures or to hide from predators. Breeding occurs year-round but peaks during spring months when young are born after a gestation period of 28 days. The Desert Cottontail is an important part of its ecosystem as it provides food for many predators such as coyotes, foxes, bobcats, hawks, owls, snakes and skunks.
