Red Ruffed Lemur Collection

The Red Ruffed Lemur (Varecia rubra) is a species of lemur found only on the island of Madagascar, and is one of the largest living members of the Lemuridae family, reaching up to 2.5 feet in length and weighing up to 4 pounds. The fur is thick and soft, ranging from reddish-brown to greyish-brown in color with white patches on its face, chest, and hands. Its tail is long and bushy with a black tip at the end. These primates are mainly arboreal but can also be found on the ground foraging for food such as fruits, flowers, leaves, insects and small vertebrates. They live in groups of up to 20 individuals that are led by an alpha female who makes all group decisions, and are considered endangered due to habitat destruction caused by human activities such as logging and charcoal production as well as hunting for bushmeat or pet trade purposes. Conservation efforts have been made through protected areas such as national parks which help ensure their survival in the wild.
