Indian Rhinoceros Collection

The Indian Rhinoceros, also known as the Greater One-horned Rhinoceros, is a large mammal native to the Indian subcontinent, and is one of five extant species of rhinoceros and is the largest animal in its range, single horn on its snout, which can grow up to 20 inches long. Its thick grey skin is covered in folds and bumps, giving it an armor-like appearance. The Indian Rhinoceros lives in grasslands and forests near rivers and wetlands. It feeds on grasses, leaves, fruits, twigs and aquatic plants. It typically lives alone or in small groups of two or three individuals but may form larger herds during mating season. The species is threatened by habitat loss due to human development as well as poaching for their horns which are used for traditional medicines and ornamental purposes. Conservation efforts have been successful at increasing populations but more work needs to be done to ensure their survival into the future.
