Sumatran Orangutan Collection

The Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) is a species of great ape native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra, and is one of only two species of orangutans, and is the most critically endangered, with an estimated population between 7,300 and 14,600 individuals. The species has been classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List since 2000 due to habitat loss from deforestation and illegal hunting, and are large animals with reddish-brown fur and long arms that can reach up to 2 meters in length, and are arboreal animals that spend most of their time in trees searching for food such as fruits, insects, leaves and bark. They also build nests in trees for sleeping at night or during bad weather. As intelligent primates they have complex social behaviors including tool use and communication through facial expressions and vocalizations. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this unique species from extinction by protecting their habitats from destruction through reforestation projects and educating local communities about the importance of conservation.
