Ornatus (Heteromyidae) is a family of small mammals found in the deserts and arid regions of North America, and are closely related to pocket mice, kangaroo rats, and kangaroo mice and can characterized by their large ears, long hind legs for hopping, and short forelimbs for digging. They have soft fur that is usually gray or brown in color with white or buff underparts. These animals feed on seeds, fruits, insects, and other small invertebrates. They build complex burrows with multiple chambers to store food and escape from predators and can nocturnal animals that spend most of their time underground during the day to avoid extreme temperatures in the desert environment. Breeding occurs during the wet season when food is plentiful; females give birth to up to six young after a gestation period of about 30 days.
