An Airedale sentry dog supplied to Navy by Major Richardson

A dog trained and supplied by Major Edwin Richardson for duty with the Navy at the Rock of Gibraltar and at points all around the coast. Picture published in The Sphere magazine, just before the outbreak of war. Richardson was a pioneer of war and police dogs in Britain and in 1917 set up a War Dog School where he trained dogs to act as messengers at the Front. Their work proved invaluable. Date: 1914

Lady Wodehouse with her Airedale Terrier

Lady Wodehouse, formerly Frances Margaret Montagu, twice-divorced wife of John Wodehouse, 3rd Earl of Kimberley (often thought to be the inspiration for P.G. Wodehouse Bertie Wooster), posed here with her Airedale. The Bystander magazine describe her as a popular hostess in the world of sport..a keen rider to hounds...a capable lawn tennis player and of course a regular supporter of polo (her husband was a leading polo player). Date: 1923
