Miners racing whippets, Illustrated London News front cover
Front cover of the Illustrated London News showing coal miners, on strike, partaking in one of their favourite pastimes, whippet racing. The dogs were trained from an early age to worry towels or rags, and during a race would run towards their owner who was waving a rag. The ILN records that the dogs could cover fully two hundred yards in thirteen seconds. Date: 1912
