Kiawe (Prosopis pallida)
Kiawe (Prosopis pallida), in silhouette. The tree survives in arid areas with long taproots that deprive neighbouring plants of water so they die. It can replace forest and prevent erosion. At the beginning of the 6th century the Nazca culture in this area collapsed, possibly when Kiawe trees were cleared following erosion and desertification after an El Nino event. The trees are now being planted in this region to combat erosion. Poroma valley, San Fernando National Reserve, Ica Region, southern Peru
