"Red Deer" winning the "Chester Cup" - from a sketch made on the spot

"Red Deer" winning the "Chester Cup" - from a sketch made on the spot, 1844. Horse racing at Chseter. The first race came off at a little after three o'clock, the last a few minutes before seven - a disregard of one of the cardinal virtues of the turf - punctuality, that might have been serviceable to the proprietors of the drinking-booths, but was anything but agreeable to those in the habit of attending Newmarket, Liverpool, Goodwood, and Ascot'. From "Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

Bridge over Rampsgill Beck, Cumbria Featured Red Deer Print

Bridge over Rampsgill Beck, Cumbria

Bridge over Rampsgill Beck, Howe Grain, Martindale, Cumbria. This delightful valley is off the beaten track as it involves a drive around lake Ullswater on a road with a dead end. This is one of the last locations for wild red deer and a large herd roams the high fells. In October the deer come down into the valley for the rut and the stags can be heard bellowing throughout the area. Walkers often start out from Gelnriding taking the steamer to Howtown and then walking up through this valley to Angle Tarn. It is then a simple case of descending down into Patterdale. One of the best kept secrets in Lakeland
