Mule deer (Cervidae) are a species of mammal in the family Cervidae, and are found throughout North America, from Canada to Mexico and can medium-sized animals, typically weighing between 90 and 300 pounds. They have large ears, long legs, and a white rump patch that is used for communication with other mule deer. Mule deer feed on grasses, forbs, shrubs, and browse throughout the year but their diet changes seasonally depending on availability of food sources. During winter months they may eat conifer needles or twigs as well as lichens and mushrooms when available, and are be active during both day and night but prefer to be most active at dawn or dusk when temperatures are cooler. Breeding occurs during late fall or early winter with males competing for females by engaging in antler fights or “rutting” behavior which involves rubbing their antlers together while making loud vocalizations such as grunts or snorts.
