Southern Right Whale Collection

The Southern Right Whale (Balaenidae) is a large mammal found in the southern hemisphere, and is one of the largest species of baleen whale, reaching up to 18 meters in length and weighing up to 80 tons, distinctive V-shaped head with no dorsal fin and a long arching mouth that extends past its eyes. Its body is black or dark grey with white patches on its belly and flippers. It feeds mainly on krill, small fish, and plankton by filtering them through its baleen plates. The Southern Right Whale migrates seasonally between breeding grounds near the coasts of South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay during summer months when food sources are abundant, and is listed as an endangered species due to hunting pressures in the 19th century which reduced their population significantly; however their numbers have been slowly increasing since then due to conservation efforts.
