Mountain Beaver Collection

The Mountain Beaver (Aplodontiidae) is a small mammal native to the Pacific Northwest of North America, and is the only living member of its family, and one of the few surviving species in an ancient group of rodents and has a stout body with short legs and a short tail, and typically grows to be about 8-10 inches long. Its fur is usually grayish-brown in color, with lighter underparts. The Mountain Beaver feeds on vegetation such as grasses, herbs, shrubs and tree bark. It also digs burrows for shelter from predators or harsh weather conditions, and are solitary animals that live in small colonies or family groups consisting of up to 10 individuals, and are active during the day but can also be seen at night when they come out to feed on vegetation near their burrows or trails they have created through their territories. The Mountain Beaver plays an important role in maintaining healthy forest ecosystems by dispersing seeds and helping aerate soil through its digging activities.
