Old Mill, Sages Ravine, 1874. Creator: John J. Harley
Old Mill, Sage's Ravine, 1874. Water mill on the Sages Ravine Brook, near Salisbury, Connecticut, USA. At the mouth of this noble ravine there are a fine old mill, and a picturesque bridge spanning the torrent which comes dashing and foaming down the wild cleft. The suggestion of trout-treasures in the pools and eddies of this noisy brook, which the artist has put in his picture, is by no means gratuitous. That eager-eyed fisherman is sure of his game, unless his looks belie him; and, if he were a mile above the mill, with his rod and line he might still fill his creel with the speckled beauties, and be happy'. From "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]
