Spearing mantis shrimp (Lysiosquilla sulcirostris) Featured Sand Tiger Print

Spearing mantis shrimp (Lysiosquilla sulcirostris)

Spearing mantis shrimp (Lysiosquilla sulcirostris), lives in a large U-shaped burrow excavated in the sand. Hunts mostly at night. During the day, burrow entrances are capped with a thin sand-mucus membrane with just the eyes and antennules protruding through a small hole in the centre. They will rapidly strike prey with their dagger-like dactyls, impaling soft-bodied prey such as fish or prawns on the needle-sharp spines. Anilao, Manila, Philippines
