Its body is reddish-brown with white spots on its sides and fins and has a large mouth with sharp teeth for crushing prey such as crabs, shrimp, and other small fishes. The Red Grouper lives near coral reefs or rocky bottoms at depths of up to 500 feet. It feeds mainly on crustaceans but will also eat smaller fishes if necessary. This species is considered an important commercial fishery species due to its high demand for food consumption and recreational fishing purposes.
