Lady Amhersts Pheasant Collection

Lady Amherst's Pheasant (Chrysolophus amherstiae) is a species of large, colorful pheasant native to the eastern Himalayas, and is named after Lady Sarah Amherst, wife of William Pitt Amherst, Governor-General of India from 1823 to 1828. The male has a long tail and bright metallic plumage with white patches on its wings and tail. The female is duller in coloration but still has some white markings on its wings and tail. Both sexes have red facial wattles and crests on their heads. They feed mainly on seeds, insects, fruits, buds and shoots but may also take small vertebrates such as frogs or lizards when available. Lady Amherst's Pheasants are found in dense forests at elevations up to 3200 meters above sea level where they roost in trees at night or during bad weather conditions, and are hunted for sport by humans as well as being threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation for timber production or agricultural expansion.
