Blood Pheasant Collection

Blood Pheasants (Phasianidae) are a species of bird native to the Himalayas in Asia, and are medium-sized birds, with males reaching up to 24 inches in length and females slightly smaller. The male has a bright red head, neck, and breast with black wings and tail feathers. Females are brownish-gray overall with dark barring on the wings and tail feathers. Both sexes have white spots on their wings. Blood Pheasants inhabit coniferous forests at elevations ranging from 6,000 to 13,000 feet above sea level. They feed mainly on insects but also eat seeds, berries, leaves and buds of various plants. During breeding season they form monogamous pairs that defend their territories against other pairs of pheasants by displaying aggressive behavior such as chasing each other around trees or engaging in physical fights. Blood Pheasant populations have been declining due to habitat destruction caused by human activities such as logging or overgrazing by livestock; however some conservation efforts have been successful in preserving this species' population numbers for future generations to enjoy.
