Found right throughout Australia except for the extreme north and southern coastal areas. Largely a bird of drier inland areas avoiding heavily settled coastal regions. Inhabits spinifex, mulga and arid grassy woodlands but always within reach of water.

The arid interior of Australia has reddish rocks and mud. The most widespread finch found right throughout Australia except for the northern, eastern and southern coasts. Generally regarded as a bird of drier inland regions. Found in grassy woodland, scrub, spinifex and mulga but never far from water
