Kokako Collection

Kokako (Callaeas cinerea) are a species of passerine bird native to New Zealand and are known as the “wattled crow” due to the distinctive wattles on either side of their beak. They have a distinct blue-grey plumage, with black wings and tail, and yellow wattles. They live in mature lowland forests, where they feed mainly on fruit, nectar and invertebrates such as insects and spiders, and are monogamous birds that form long-term pair bonds with their mate and defend their territories from other kokako pairs. Unfortunately, kokako populations have declined significantly due to habitat loss caused by human activities such as logging and land clearance for agriculture. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species from extinction by restoring its natural habitat through replanting native trees in areas where kokako once lived.
