Rifleman Collection

Rifleman (Acanthisitta chloris) is a small passerine bird native to New Zealand, and is one of the smallest birds in the world, measuring only 8-10 cm in length and weighing just 5-7 g. The Rifleman is mainly brown with a white throat and breast, and has a distinctive black stripe running down its back. Its diet consists mainly of insects, spiders, and other invertebrates which it catches by hovering over vegetation or on the ground. It also eats fruits such as berries, nectar from flowers, and occasionally small lizards or frogs. The Rifleman's habitat ranges from lowland forests to alpine shrublands throughout New Zealand's North Island and South Island. It builds its nest in tree cavities or crevices among rocks where it lays 2-4 eggs per clutch which are incubated by both parents for about two weeks before hatching.
